How did the club bring you two together, and what role does it play in your relationship today?
We first met in the piano bar in November 2012. I was with friends having a drink and listening to Joe Thompson playing. Moyra was with her friend Simon Cabot, whose mother was visiting from Australia. I struck up a conversation at the bar with Simon and he introduced me to his mother and Moyra. We chatted briefly and Moyra and I exchanged business cards. This was important for later developments.
Who spotted who first, and was it love at first sight?
We spotted one another at the same time! No, it wasn’t love at first sight. That came later. We parted ways that first evening and Moyra went off to attend to her business interests in Australia and I went off to the High Atlas Mountains of Morrocco providing humanitarian support to the Berbers. She sent me a text from Australia, from Melbourne in fact, to let me know that she had just been to the Opera and seen “Madama Butterfly”. I responded so quickly (quicker than I could have Googled it according to Moyra) saying “’One Fine Day’ - my favourite aria”.
How did it develop from there?
Next came the consolidation at the Ivy Club New Year’s Eve Party. Moyra was with a group of friends, as was I (one of my group, incidentally was Richard O’Brien, who wrote “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”- in those days he was a frequent Club visitor). We both found ourselves up in the Loft seeing in the New Year and stole a celebratory kiss. That was it. We then started to see one another regularly got married in 2020 and now live happily ever after in Pimlico.
Do you usually attend events and activities at the club together, or do you have your own separate interests there?
We tend to use the Club mainly for social, rather than business, purposes. Normally we will be together especially of an evening, but during the day we use the Club to meet friends, both together and separately. We enjoy the Club atmosphere and have made many friends over the years. I’m a Founder Member, so I have seen the Club in all its various incarnations over the years. Moyra is a long-standing member too, joining a year or so after its foundation.
Have your experiences at the club shaped your connection in any unexpected ways?
Well, when we first met we didn’t expect to get married! The Club brought together two people in a most unexpected way. Neither of us was looking for romance. It just developed naturally over time. On reflection, we were members of the same Club, we have many common interests, including music (thank you Joe Thompson), food and drink, and meeting nice people in comfortable, intimate surroundings.
One of our great pleasures in life is spending an evening together in the Club, recapturing the magic of those earlier romantic days of our relationship. A cocktail in the piano bar, a glass of champagne followed by a cosy dinner in those iconic wing-back chairs in the Drawing Room, then a night cap listening to Joe on the piano before heading home. That’s love - Ivy Club style…
